Abstract

JUANATEY, Mayra. MOTION-CUM-PURPOSE IN THE QUICHUA OF SANTIAGO, ARGENTINA. Forma funcion, Santaf, de Bogot, D.C. [online]. 2020, vol.33, n.1, pp.63-85. ISSN 0120-338X.  https://doi.org/10.15446/fyf.v33n1.84181.

Languages belonging to the Quechua family (South America) can express motion-cum-purpose (MCP) through a finite motion verb and a nominalized form (with the nominalizer «-q») that indicates the purpose event. In the Quichua of Santiago (Argentina), when this construction involves the finite verb 'to go', it has been grammaticalized as a periphrastic future and, in general, no longer codifies MCP. The central hypothesis of this article, which takes into account studies that address MCP relations from a functional-typological approach, is that the Quichua of Santiago can also express MCP through a clause-chain with a medial motion verb (indicated by the suffix «-s») and a finite verb that indicates the purpose event.

Keywords : syntax; semantics; motion-cum-purpose; grammaticalization; Quechua; Quichua of Santiago (Argentina).
