RAMIREZ-CRUZ, Héctor y CHAPARRO ROJAS, John Freddy. Introduction: linguistic diversity and endangered languages research. Forma. func. [online]. 2021, vol.34, n.2, e6558. Epub 01-Jul-2021. ISSN 0120-338X. https://doi.org/10.15446/fyf.v34n2.96558.
This introductory paper states discussion points about research activities with indigenous and creole languages and marginalized dialectal varieties worldwide. It is argued that the threat on linguistic and cultural diversity requires deep transformations of the research activity, enabling a compromise position for the defense of the endangered languages. First, an overview of the linguistic diversity in danger is presented both worldwide and in Colombia. Some advances are examined regarding language documentation, linguistic description, and education for ethnic groups in Colombia. Then, the challenges of language documentation are discussed along with the opportunity of bridging sociolinguistic research and language documentation and description. Finally, some celebrations of linguistic diversity are highlighted and the articles of this special issue are introduced.
