Abstract

HERNANDEZ-GREEN, Néstor. Morphological aspects of verb conjugations in Tenango Otomi. Forma. func. [online]. 2021, vol.34, n.2, e8303.  Epub June 14, 2021. ISSN 0120-338X.  https://doi.org/10.15446/fyf.v34n2.88303.

In this paper, I explore some morphological aspects observed in Tenango Otomi (Oto-Manguean > Oto-Pamean > Otomi) verbal inflection: on the one hand, the fact that verbs can be grouped into different inflectional classes according to three criteria: (1) the TAM/person markers they select, (2) initial consonant mutations (if any), and (3) tone alternations in the verb stem. On the other hand, I explore correlations between the inflectional classes resulting from these three criteria. Furthermore, I discuss the possibility that this system of verb conjugations (according to the TAM/person mark criterion) is more adequately described as a system of segregated inflectional classes.

Keywords : Oto-Pamean; Oto-Manguean; heteroclysis; verbal inflection; segregated inflectional classes.
