Abstract

GUILLEN ESCAMILLA, Josaphat Enrique. Study in real time of discourse marker «ya te/le digo» in Mexico City’s Spanish. Forma. func. [online]. 2023, vol.36, n.1, e6951.  Epub Nov 17, 2022. ISSN 0120-338X.  https://doi.org/10.15446/fyf.v36n1.96951.

Within the investigations of discourse markers, a research area which has experienced a recent development is studies in real time, from ideas proposed by Labov. Following this tendency, the aim of this paper is analyzing the discourse marker ya te/le digo in Mexico City’ Spanish in two periods of time, 1970 and 2000. We want to figure out if its frequency has changed during this lapse of time and if this possible variation is related with social factors: age, sex, and education level. Three oral corpora were analyzed from Mexico City’s Spanish, two of them built between 1967 and 1974, and the third one was built between 1999 and 2005. According to analysis, women, older people, and lower education level use more frequently ya te/le digo. Finally, we conclude that these three social features (particularly age) can explain why ya te/le digo has been disappearing in Mexico City's Spanish.
