AVILA MOLINA, Angélica María. Participatory Construction of Recommendations for Literacy Teaching in the Wounaan Community of Bogotá. Forma. func. [online]. 2023, vol.36, n.2, e1016. Epub 01-Jun-2023. ISSN 0120-338X. https://doi.org/10.15446/fyf.v36n2.101016.
Indigenous language literacy has been utilized to elevate prestige, create a lasting record and facilitate language learning, while Spanish has facilitated academic success and access to work. In a globalized and urban world, it provides opportunities for participation, social dialogue and dissent. Therefore, it is essential to develop literacy learning processes that do not undermine indigenous languages or their oral traditions. This study aimed to develop participatory recommendations for teaching literacy in the Wounmeu language (ISO 639-3 noa) and in Spanish, aligned with the Wounaan worldview, to facilitate decision-making in the development of the Community Education Project and the linguistic planning for literacy education in urban settings. To this end, this paper examines the perspectives on literacy in indigenous communities, presents the project and the linguistic practices of the community, explains the recommendations, evaluates the process and provides concluding remarks.
