Abstract
JULCA-GUERRERO, Félix and NIVIN-VARGAS, Laura. Academic and sociocultural activism in the revitalization of Quechua in Ancash, Peru. Forma. func. [online]. 2023, vol.36, n.2, e1986. Epub June 05, 2023. ISSN 0120-338X. https://doi.org/10.15446/fyf.v36n2.101986.
This paper analyzes, from a quantitative and qualitative perspective, the academic and sociocultural activism of Quechua professionals in the revaluation and strengthening of Quechua in Ancash, Peru. Ancash Quechua is one of the major varieties of Central Quechua, both geographically and demographically; however, studies report the progressive decrease of Quechua speakers. On the basis of the development of intercultural bilingual education, Quechua academics organized in Quechua collectives began to work comprehensively on the linguistic and sociolinguistic study of Quechua, language teaching, production of materials and development of academic events. These actions have made possible an unusual interest of Ancash Quechua speakers and their descendants to retake the original language, as well as of Spanish speakers to learn Quechua and identify themselves with Quechua cultural manifestations. Today in Ancash, in the scenario of globalization and modernization, there is a situation of greater visibility, revaluation and revitalization of Quechua.
