The purpose of this article is double: communicating the results of research about the construction of a critical review and explaining the advantages obtained through the application of the metacognitive strategies. This research was conducted with a group of postgraduate students and following the orientation of three pedagogical models of academic writing: the processual model of writing, the pedagogical intervention model and the approach Writing in the disciplines. Some results show that metacognition favors the control and regulation of the complex processes, specially if it is related to the revision of the protocols, the intermediate drafts, and the work in pairs. It is possible to conclude that the production of a critical review is associated with the previous knowledge, the use of auto regulated strategies, and writing practice based on a innovative model
