Abstract

PASCUAL, Mariana. Empowering Foreign Language Students: A Pedagogical Proposal on the Basis of Appraisal Theory. Leng. [online]. 2014, vol.42, n.1, pp.69-96. ISSN 0120-3479.

Relying on the great potential that Critical Discourse Analysis offers in educational contexts, this study proposes the development of university students' reading abilities through the implementation of strategies aimed at developing their critical language awareness (Fairclough, 1992). It uses the language analysis tools provided by the Theory of Appraisal (Martin & White, 2005), which constitutes a part of the larger framework of Systemic Functional Linguistics. This proposal is illustrated by the analysis of a news story published by The New York Times on the occasion of the death of Argentina's former president Néstor Kirchner

Keywords : CDA (Critical Discourse Analysis); critical awareness; foreign languages; Appraisal Theory; university education.
