There are two strong trends in the social sciences today: a) a growing interest in the study of power as a sociopolitical phenomenon; b) the interdisciplinary approach of this and other social issues. However, in recent compilations on the subject of power, applied linguistics has not been included, a fact that represents a large gap given the natural relationship between language and power, and the very practical and interdisciplinary nature of the discipline. Here are three very representative areas of applied linguistics that shed light on power relations within and between nations
