This paper aims to adjust the MIPVU (Metaphor Identification Procedure of Vrije Universiteit, Steen et al., 2010) to the identification of metonymies. To that end, we make a critical revision of three definitions of metonymy based on domains (Lakoff, 1987), on spatio-temporal continuity (Seto, 1999) and on radial categories (Peirsman & Geeraerts, 2006). These definitions are set against non-prototypical metonymies. We also analize the possibility of co-occurence of metonymies with other processes, such as semantic generalization and specialization. Finally, since these processes were mainly applied to nouns, we try to analyze their relationship with other parts of the speech
