This paper aims at identifying the characteristics of the descriptive sub-function in an English tourist guidebook. The theoretical framework and method of the study are based on pragmatic aspects taken from previous studies on translating of tourist texts and traductology in general. The method of analysis included the following stages: 1) Previous reading to identify extratextual elements; 2) In-depth reading to identify descriptive elements of the sub-function; 3) identification of intentions; 4) identification of actions, and 5) outlining of the characteristics of the guidebook. This method led to the conclusion that a systematic analysis of extratextual and intratextual elements and the questioning of texts can result in an account of the characteristics of the descriptive sub-function.
