Abstract

VALERDI ZARATE, Julio César. The linguistic expression of attitude in the argumentative structure of academic discourse. Leng. [online]. 2020, vol.48, n.1, pp.1-37. ISSN 0120-3479.  https://doi.org/10.25100/lenguaje.v48i1.8520.

In this paper I propose an argumentative approach for analyzing the rhetorical functions of the systems of attitude in academic discourse. Such an approach consists of a methodological crossing between the Appraisal model and Toulmin’s Argumentation Model. Through the evaluative-argumentative analysis of 20 MA thesis introductions, this paper demonstrates the analysis of appraisal resources within the framework of argumentative schemes allows for a more delicate description of the workings of resources of attitude than those developed on the basis of the global structure of texts. The identification of both the rhetorical relations held among realizations of attitude and the argumentative patterns in which they take place constitutes a methodological innovation that could help improve our current understanding of the rhetorical influence of evaluative language in discourse. This might in turn increase the potential of this kind of knowledge to be applied to various academic and social linguistic processes in Spanish and other languages.

Keywords : appraisal; argumentation; attitude; academic writing; rhetorical functions.
