Abstract
SYMAN, Tatsiana and IGNATIEVA, Natalia. Metafunctional analysis of Economics texts translations from Spanish into English. Leng. [online]. 2024, vol.52, n.1, e20113044. Epub Jan 22, 2024. ISSN 0120-3479. https://doi.org/10.25100/lenguaje.v52i1.13044.
Different institutional documents are released by Banco de México in Spanish and translated into English, both published on its web page. Given the potential impact of possible flaws in translated texts, we analyzed a bilingual corpus of institutional documents based on translation techniques and using Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL). Specifically, the employed translation techniques were analyzed, and translation errors were recorded and classified. Subsequently, a three-dimensional metafunctional analysis was conducted: ideational analysis (focused on processes and participants); interpersonal analysis (centered on expressions of attitude, formality, modality, etc.); and textual analysis (coherence in thematic organization). While the identification of translation errors improves the translated document, the metafunctional exploration provides a deeper qualitative analysis of the aspects not reflected in the techniques, reveals the causes of translation errors, and may serve as a criterion in determining equivalence in translation.
