The development of research writing is one of the most relevant tasks in higher education, particularly, the scientific research article genre involves challenges for the novice researcher. The objective of this study is to interpret the skills required for its elaboration in master's degree students in Education in Ecuador. Regarding the methodology, it is framed in the interpretive paradigm through the hermeneutic method; with respect to the instrument, surveys and interviews were applied to students and teachers who participated in a collaborative writing practice. As results, it is observed a scarce mastery by master students of argumentative strategies with which to assume themselves as research subjects as well as of methodological resources; in addition, it is evident the need to carry out discursive practices located from the beginning of the postgraduate career that allow guaranteeing the communicability of science and the strengthening of journals in the area.
