PARDO SALDARRIAGA, Jerónimo et al. Characterization of informal French language practice spaces in Medellín, Colombia. Leng. [online]. 2024, vol.52, n.2, e20714455. Epub 27-Dic-2024. ISSN 0120-3479. https://doi.org/10.25100/lenguaje.v52i2.14455.
In the city of Medellín, informal language practice spaces are increasingly appearing; that is why it is important to study this phenomenon in the city. This ethnographic study aimed to characterize the informal French language practice spaces and their participants in the city of Medellín. The researchers participated in three different spaces: one bar and two cafes. The data come from field observations, recordings of exchanges, surveys of participants, and an interview with one of the space facilitators. The results show that the practices developed in each place differ widely from the classroom learning situations, and that they are characterized by their spontaneity, little correction, and the mobilization of the plurilingual competence. The participants are generally professionals, they possess broad linguistic repertoires, and they practice French for intrinsic motivations.
