Abstract
BAQUERO CALDAS, Andrea Marcela and NIETO MARTIN, Gloria Viviana. Uses of the ethical dative in Spanish: speakers' perceptions and implications for its approach in the ELE/L2 classroom. Leng. [online]. 2024, vol.52, n.2, suppl.1, e20213563. Epub Oct 31, 2024. ISSN 0120-3479. https://doi.org/10.25100/lenguaje.v52i2s.13563.
From a syntactic perspective, the use of the ethical dative in Spanish is superfluous; however, its expressive value (familiar, affectionate, close) motivates native Spanish speakers to frequently employ it, especially in informal oral interactions. This article presents the results of research on the perceptions of native and non-native speakers regarding the change in meaning in some constructions with and without the ethical dative, their beliefs about the use of this pragmatic element, analyzed according to four variables (gender, age, geographical variety, and formal or informal communicative contexts). We conclude that while gender does not seem to be a determining variable for its use, age, geographical variety and the communicative context are. Based on these results, we propose the explicit presentation of the ethical dative in Spanish as a second language (ELE/L2) classes in Latin America, from level A2, and design material to support its didactic treatment, from the perspectives of pedagogical grammar and visual grammar.
