Resumen

SAVIO, Karina. Punctuation marks in academia. A study from the perspective of Argentine students. Leng. [online]. 2025, vol.53, n.1, e20714732.  Epub 27-Jun-2025. ISSN 0120-3479.  https://doi.org/10.25100/lenguaje.v53i1.14732.

This article presents a qualitative and quantitative study of the perspectives of a group of incoming students at an Argentine university on punctuation marks and their possible uses. To this end, a brief questionnaire with open-ended questions was designed and administered to 166 students in 2024. A data matrix was created to code the responses, searching for repetitive patterns. The results revealed, on the one hand, the predominance of the prosodic use of punctuation marks and, on the other, a fragmented knowledge of the use of commas, periods, colons, and quotation marks, with the emergence of nonspecific uses, inappropriate uses, and the absence of certain common uses. Evidencing the lack of metalinguistic knowledge allows for the design of specific pedagogical strategies for university entrance that adapt to different educational needs.

Palabras clave : academic literacy; academic writing; educational inclusion; metalinguistic awareness; punctuation.
