JIMENEZ, Darío F et al. Effect of Climatic Variability on Water Demand for Urban Residential Use: The Case of City of Manizales, Colombia. Desarro. soc. [online]. 2017, n.79, pp.91-124. ISSN 0120-3584.  https://doi.org/10.13043/DYS.79.3.

A structural model which is consistent with utility maximization was used to estimate urban residential water demand in Manizales, Colombia. Housing and household characteristics collected using a survey, price, income, precipitation and a dummy variable representing whether a month corresponds to El Niño were considered in the estimation of the urban residential water demand. Results suggest that climate variability, particularly the occurrence of El Niño events, has a positive effect on water consumption. Results provide valuable information to policy makers and regulation of water resources in developing countries, specifically in urban areas and potential reduction of water supply given the occurrence of El Niño events.

Palavras-chave : Water demand; discrete/continuous choice model; elasticity; climate variability.
