Abstract
GRANDE, Rafael. INTEGRATION OR REMITTANCES? DETERMINANTS OF MONETARY TRANSFERS OF LATIN AMERICAN MIGRANTS IN SPAIN. Desarro. soc. [online]. 2018, n.80, pp.155-187. ISSN 0120-3584. https://doi.org/10.13043/dys.80.5.
The aim of this paper is to examine what factors determine the level of remittances sent by Latin American and Caribbean immigrants in Spain. Microdata from the 2007 Spanish National Survey on Immigration are used to estimate linear regression models and censored models by the act of remittance to analyse both the probability of remitting and the amount of the money sent to the home country. The results show, first, that the level of remittances is determined by family settlements and labor market integration. This is also shown in the higher level sent when increasing the years of residence in the host country. Second, remittances are determined by the existence of agreements with the family at origin or self-interest with the proposed to prepare the possible return.
