Abstract

MUNEVAR MENESES, Sandra Milena; SILVA ARIAS, Adriana Carolina  and  SARMIENTO ESPINEL, Jaime Andrés. Exposure to armed conflict and academic achievement in Colombia. Desarro. soc. [online]. 2019, n.83, pp.13-53. ISSN 0120-3584.  https://doi.org/10.13043/dys.83.1.

Education is one of the channels by which a violent context could affect social welfare. The purpose of this article is to analyze the incidence of the Colombian armed conflict on the academic performance of primary and secondary school students. We estimated the effect of armed actions on the proportion of students by performance level in two national standardized tests. We found that as armed actions intensified, the percentage of students with insufficient academic performance increased. The effect was relatively stronger in the language test and among secondary students. The negative impact of armed actions on academic achievement, especially among young people, could have a persistent effect on human capital in the long run.

Keywords : Violence; primary education; secondary education; Student evaluation; Colombia.
