As a contribution to improved efficiency of the value chain and the supply chain for coffee, this article describes and characterizes the functionality, connection and synergy of each of its agents and links in a global and national context, using the method of basic functions analysis. In addition, it shows the dynamics of the recent economic evolution of the coffee sector, both in the world and in Colombia. And it expounds reasons that have influenced the situation today, and finally proposes approaches for research.
