Abstract

ARENS KUCKELKORN, EDUARDO. JOB, OR THEOLOGY FROM HUMAN DIGNITY: ESSENTIAL NOTES. Theol. Xave. [online]. 2010, vol.60, n.170, pp.371-394. ISSN 0120-3649.

Traditionally, it has been common to affirm that Job's rebelliousness was caused by him having lost his material possessions or as a consequence from suffering a painful disease. However, re-reading the text from the socio-cultural perspective, reveals that the cause was no other than had being ripped of his honor. This supreme value has been undermined by a false conception of God provided by his friends: God punished Job; thus, he was a sinner, and in consequence neither respect nor compassion should be granted to him. This article intends to highlight the importance of taking into account in all exegetical studies the anthropological and socio-cultural matrices. Otherwise, it might lead to basic human rights violations made in the name of "the Word of God".

Keywords : Job; theodicy; wisdom; biblical anthropology; cultural values (culture).
