Abstract

PARADA, María Eugenia et al. Job satisfaction and burnout syndrome in the nursing staff of the Instituto Autónomo Hospital Universitario Los Andes, Mérida, Venezuela, 2005. Rev. Fac. Nac. Salud Pública [online]. 2005, vol.23, n.1, pp.33-45. ISSN 0120-386X.

Objective: the objective of this study was to determine the frequency of the burnout syndrome and its relationship with job satisfaction in the nursing staff of the Autonomous Institute of Los Andes University (IAHULA), at Mérida, Venezuela. Methods: this study is descriptive, following a transversal design, and uses a sample of 104 nurse staff workers (83 women and 21 men), of the areas of hospitalization, intensive care unit, and obstetric, pediatric and adult emergencies. The sample was chosen using random stratified sampling. A survey on demographic variables, the Maslach burnout Inventory (MBI) questionnaire, and the Warr, Cook and Wall’s questionnaire for working satisfaction scale were applied. Results: the resulting values were: 15.42±10.79 in emotional tiredness, 5.58±5.45 in depersonalization and 40.21±6.83 in personal fulfillment. 6.73% of the nursing staff presented burnout syndrome. The media were of 35.72±8.94 in intrinsic satisfaction; 30.67±9.19 in extrinsic satisfaction and 66.39±17.21 in general satisfaction. Conclusions: it is concluded that the burnout level is low, although there is high epidemiological risk. There is a moderate level of satisfaction, due mainly to work intrinsic factors. The social-demographic variables show a low modulating effect in the size of the burnout syndrome.
