Abstract

SEGURA C, ángela María; REY S, Juan José  and  ARBELAEZ M, María Patricia. Tuberculosis mortality and hospital discharge tendencies before and during the health sector reform, Antioquia, 1985-1999. Rev. Fac. Nac. Salud Pública [online]. 2005, vol.23, n.2, pp.83-89. ISSN 0120-386X.

Objective: to describe the changes in tuberculosis mortality and hospital discharge tendencies during the implementation of the Colombian health sector reform for Antioquia department between 1985 and 1999. Materials and methods: a time serial analysis was performed on the mortality rates and discharge incidence proportions, for which the series were segmented depending on the inflection point. Results: mortality series for all causes presented a random, decreasing trend until 1992 when it is observed a slight increase and later stabilization of the rates until 1997 when it decreased again. Hospital discharge series presented a random, decreasing trend interrupted in 1994 and 1996. Conclusions: Antioquia tuberculosis hospital discharge and mortality tendencies underwent changes in Tuberculosis mortality and hospital discharge tendencies before and during the health sector reform, Antioquia, 1985-1999 1992, moment at which mortality changed its tendency to a lower level, whereas hospital discharge conserved its rate despite a considerable increase in 1994. Those changes presented between 1992 and 1997 agreed with the time of implementation of the health reform in Antioquia, reform intended to decentralize public health programs and to disarticulate institutions in charge of the disease control.
