LEON A, Alba Luz et al. Natality and fecundity, Colombia, 2001. Rev. Fac. Nac. Salud Pública [online]. 2006, vol.24, n.2, pp.07-16. ISSN 0120-386X.
Colombian birth, fertility and live birth rates from 2001 are presented, based on total live birth records of the National Statistics Administrative Department (DANE) (n = 724.236). Colombian population estimated at half the period was divided into eight categories of municipalities according to population size, as determined by Law 617/2001. There were no important differences between variables concerning newborns characteristics when analyzed by municipalities categories. For childbirth and mother characteristics significant differences were found according to established categories. In general, live newborns presented normal conditions of vitality. A net birth rate of 16.84 per 1,000 persons and a fertility rate of 62.08 births per 1,000 women in reproductive age were found. It was observed that birth and fertility rates change according to population structure and they would be influenced by external factors such as the health system structure as well as social, cultural and economic conditions, among others. Feedback processes are recommended for birth and fertility data by the implementation of a system allowing a continuous collection of indicators data.
