OBJECTIVE:To identify determinant factors of dental care utilization among university students in municipality of Pasto- Department of Nariño, Colombia. METHODOLOGY: a sample of 338 university students, we applied a confidential survey, based upon previous studies using a health care services utilization behavorial model. RESULTS:the prevalence of dental care utilization was 57%. About enabling factors more than half of the population surveyed are young adults among 20-24 years old, the higher courses students most used the oral health services and the students oldest less did it, while the half of the students belong to middle class and the tenth had low social support. About predisposing factors three fourths responded ‘to have good health state’, they are most used dental health care, while the students responded ‘to be satisfied with the appearance of their tooth’, they less did it, third responded ‘to have bad oral health state’ and almost the half responded ‘to had dental difficulties’. In relation to need factors, the students that affected their quality of life for physical disability, they most used dental health care services in the last year. CONCLUSION: there are minimum differences in dental care utilization by sex and although the dental care utilization is high in this population, not necessarily to ensure that they have a better oral health.
