Abstract

OBJECTIVE: to explore the association of structural social determinants and lifestyle with access to dental dams during gestation. METHODOLOGY cross-sectional study was conducted with 993 mothers who were in immediate puerperium in public and private clinics in the city of Cali, Colombia. Logistic regression was used to assess the association of socioeconomic variables with a visit to dentist during pregnancy adjusted lifestyle variables in oral health. RESULTS : dental attendance during pregnancy was 83% with an unequal distribution. Those attending were a greater proportion was affiliated to the tax (88.7%, OR = 2.4 95% CI = 1.7 to 3.4), had completed secondary or higher (88%, OR = 2.6 95 1.8 to 3.6%), higher grade of oral health knowledge (61.9%, OR = 2.2 95% CI = 1.6-3.1), lower risk cariogenic diet consumption (73.6 , OR = 2.6 95% CI = 1.9 to 3.7), hygienic practices (83.4, OR = 2.4 95 = 1.6 to 3.5). DISCUSSION :social determinants such as socioeconomic status and lifestyle were associated with pregnant women access to dental services during pregnancy. The lifestyle-related oral health knowledge, dietary habits, beliefs and oral hygiene practices differed according to socioeconomic level of the mother.
