OBJECTIVE:to conduct a comparative analysis of four models of health care for indigenous people in the Andean region of Colombia in order to provide useful categories of analysis for the design and evaluation of care models in indigenous contexts. METHODOLOGY: a comparative analysis was used when reviewing individual cases of care models in Colombia, Bolivia, Chile and Venezuela. Information from secondary sources was systematically reviewed and analyzed to extract fragments and quotations referring to some aspect of the model. Then, sets were formed with elements that were similar or different. Finally, variables and parameters were identified for the purpose of comparing. RESULTS:five categories of analysis are proposed. These can be used to analyze, design, and evaluate a health care model for indigenous contexts. The categories are: 1. Human Resource, 2. Physical Resource, 3. Spaces of social interaction and participation, 4. Model management strategies 5. Philosophical and conceptual aspects. CONCLUSIONS: A comprehensive legal framework supports the implementation of health care models for indigenous people, but there are significant shortcomings in the conceptualization and definition of the structural elements of the models. Health care models have been structured as adjustments to national health systems as an answer to the tensions that appear in socially and culturally diverse contexts. Culturally focused models are useful strategies to ensure health equity.
