Nurses play an important role in the Hospital when innovations are implemented. However, their attitude as to specific issue of Diagnosis Related Groups as an innovation is unknown. OBJECTIVE: To characterize the perception of Diagnosis Related Groups as an innovation by nursing department of a high complexity hospital in Colombia. METHODOLOGY: A case study of the perception of an innovation in a hospital. The information was obtained from a survey and a focus group. Descriptive statistics were calculated for the survey. The data from the focus group were transcribed and content - analyzed. . RESULTS : The perception of the innovative culture was positive and there were differences according to education, hierarchical position and sex; other variables were not significant. Only 12.5% of participants were familiar with Diagnosis Related Groups, and their attitude was predominantly positive. The attribute that generated less enthusiasm and greater dispersion, was the complexity. There were no differences in perception of five attributes for any demographic variable. CONCLUSION : The homogeneity of perception suggests a favorable environment for implementing the Diagnosis Related Groups.
