Abstract

JARAMILLO, Gustavo A. Posada  and  PUERTA, Alina M. Restrepo. Dietary and environmental risk factors associated with dental fluorosis, Andes, Antioquia 2015. Rev. Fac. Nac. Salud Pública [online]. 2017, vol.35, n.1, pp.79-90. ISSN 0120-386X.  https://doi.org/10.17533/udea.rfnsp.v35n1a09.

Objective:

to determine the environmental and dietary factors related to dental fluorosis in the population aged 12 to 15 in the municipality of Andes in 2015 in order to generate oral health intervention proposals.

Methodology:

a case-control study with a control for each case in a population of 206 teenagers aged 12 to 15. Selection criteria: teenagers having been diagnosed with dental fluorosis between 2012 and 2014 who had been reported in the Epidemiological Surveillance System. People who didn’t have erupted teeth in more than 50%, had undergone extensive restorations or had extensive cavities, fractured teeth and total edentulous were excluded. The cases were selected by simple random sampling while the controls were chosen by convenience. A clinical examination was carried out to classify the presence and level of dental fluorosis according to the Dean Index. A survey was applied on parents to find out information about their self-care habits, and to identify possible sources of exposure to fluoride. Sociodemographic, alimentary, behavioral, environmental and clinical variables were analyzed. Pearson’s Chi2 and OR with 95% confidence intervals were also used. A fluoride concentration analysis was performed on samples of agrochemicals, food, water for human consumption, salt, toothpaste and soils.

Results:

through binary logistic regression using the stepwise method, the results showed an association between agrochemical manipulation and dental fluorosis (OR = 2.093, 95% 1.017 and 4.307).

Conclusion:

the manipulation of agrochemicals is a risk factor for the development of dental fluorosis among the teenagers from the municipality of Andes.

Keywords : dental fluorosis; fluoride; epidemiology.
