Abstract

CAMARGO URIBE, Leonor. Piaget's Legacy for Geometry Teaching. Rev. colomb. educ. [online]. 2011, n.60, pp.41-60. ISSN 0120-3916.

As a contribution to the tribute of Jean Piaget's work 30 years after his decease, we offer a brief review of some of his ideas and how they have been the origin of later studies related to Geometry and learning-and-teaching processes. Two main Piaget hypotheses about development of space concept adopted by children are presented. Piaget´s point of view on children's competence for discriminating and representing geometric shapes, building two-and three-dimensional reference systems, and justifying statements about geometrical facts are also shown. For each task a reference is made regarding further studies, most of them in a school environment, which validate Piaget's ideas or suggest their review.

Keywords : Piaget; Geometry teaching; discrimination of geometric shapes; two-and three-dimensional representation.
