Abstract
PINHEIRO, Ana Regina. Carolina Ribeiro and the Pioneering Sao Paulo Teaching. Inherited Memories. Rev. colomb. educ. [online]. 2011, n.61, pp.141-159. ISSN 0120-3916.
This paper discusses issues of educational footprint by Carolina Ribeiro (1892-1982), highlighting her training in school-teaching, her career and role as a São Paulo education director and her involvement with Catholic Church during Brazilian structuring education process in 1930' and 1940'; she was also a leader of São Paulo Normal School from 1939 to 1948 and first woman to assume the Education Secretary at 1955; throughout her life, Ribeiro shaped a close cooperation with Catholic groups, especially the League of São Paulo Catholic Teachers (LPC), enthusiastically participating in a wide dispute over teachers' ideology control (Chagas de Carvalho, 1989.) She led a movement to protect memories of São Paulo Education, which structured the reforms implemented by other Brazilian states in 1920' and kept a critical note on reforms looking to structure the national state but threatened São Paulo politics and education hegemony. Therefore, focus on her career wants to recover non-always convergent discourses and practices whose contents are re-signified on the road according to objective status (Bourdieu, 1996), and approaches and dialogues established taking into account the broad national impact reached by that teaching model.
