This article reviews the Afrocolombian educational thought during the twentieth century. This thought is characterized by a questioning position on the State's educational policy. The development of such an insubmissive, maroon thought has been continuous and constant, first in black scholars' academic production -this article will focus on four of them, Diego Luis Córdoba, Rogerio Velásquez, Miguel A. Caicedo, and Manuel Zapata Olivella-, and later boosted by educational initiatives from organizations and teachers from the Afrocolombian social movement during the 80's and 90's. Thus, an understudied epistemic field arises in our country. It is also suggested that this educational thought is highly influenced by the critical political identity category, which embraces concepts such as freedom, autonomy, and dignity. Even though the black scholars studied here come from a positivist school, their discourses, essays and novels are in no way subject to the westernized academic matrix. They assume the epistemic insubmission as a way towards liberation and provide an example for the Afrocolombian social movement.
