Abstract

This paper aims to reflect, from a philosophical point of view, on the fate of the university in relation to the new guidelines of the so-called "economy of knowledge," which has become the convenient route for higher education to follow and that focuses on the predominance of calculating thought. Opposite to this position, there is the humanistic approach, which gave rise and led to the development of historic university under the principle of freedom. This view, however, favors the formation of human beings and their reflective thoughts, for the sake of their autonomy. Is this latter position just another utopia?.
