With the intention of problematizing school life and the result of field work in two secondary schools located in contexts of poverty, this article will analyze the category of school soil to describe the material and symbolic conditions in which teaching work is conducted. In this area, emergencies and needs must be tended to -although this is the case of the very constitution of the public and the urban-wise peripheral school and urban school in Argentina-. This article will focus on institutional configurations on less-cruel-to-inhabit land, constituting democratic spaces -if they are not the only ones- in the lives of their students
