VARGAS-SANCHEZ, Juan Roberto. Family Capital and School Achievement in Mexican Secondary Schools. Rev. colomb. educ. [online]. 2023, n.88, pp.237-256.  Epub 23-Jan-2024. ISSN 0120-3916.  https://doi.org/10.17227/rce.num88-13575.

Knowledge of socioeconomic status and access to cultural assets is essential to contextualize and understand differences in school performance. Global family capital is an index that incorporates students' socioeconomic status and cultural capital. This research analyzes the relationship between global family capital and school achievement in mathematics and language and communication of Mexican secondary school students. For this purpose, quantile regressions with plausible values are used in each educational modality; thus, the analysis is conducted at different points of the distribution of school achievement. In all modalities, family capital is positively and significantly associated with school achievement, except in the case of community schools; in these, it does not matter how much this capital is increased to improve school achievement, which makes it necessary to look for other alternatives to optimize it. In the other modalities, the findings suggest that it is necessary to financially support students with the lowest levels of school achievement to increase their overall family capital on the socioeconomic level, since, in them, such capital has a greater effect. In private schools, the effects of family capital are the greatest. Finally, it is worth remembering that contributing to reduce the academic gap originated by socioeconomic origin is the responsibility of the educational system.
