Abstract

PINEDA-ALFONSO, José Antonio  and  LUNA, Diego. The Construction of ethos in the Catholic School as a Formative Reference. Rev. colomb. educ. [online]. 2025, n.95, a18623.  Epub Apr 01, 2025. ISSN 0120-3916.  https://doi.org/10.17227/rce.num95-18623.

This study aimed to understand the ethos of the Catholic school from the perspective of teachers in training. To achieve this, a critical-discursive approach was adopted through a multi-analytical procedure, using a sample of practicum reports (n = 22) from Catholic charter schools in the province of Seville (Spain) as the corpus. The results from the preliminary, lexicometric, and content analyses allowed us for the configuration of an emergent category system comprising a macrocategory ("The construction of Identity through the Dialectic of Cohesion vs. Segregation") and four categories ("Singularity and the aesthetics of distinction", "Ideology and principles, discipline and coexistence", "Excellence and the culture of effort" and "The discursive positioning of the trainee teacher"). These results encourage further research into the identification of the discursive mechanisms and semiotic resources through which the identity of Catholic educational centres is constructed.

Keywords : catholic school; charter schools; institutional culture; discourse analysis; teacher training.
