Abstract

Introduction: Some effects on the lipid profile, due to the action of tocopherols, tocotrienols and saturated, mono and polyunsaturated fatty acids, have been reported. Objective: To evaluate the effect of vegetable oil consumption of high use in Colombia (palm, soy, corn, sunflower, and canola), on blood concentrations of triglycerides (TG), total cholesterol (TC) and HDL cholesterol (HDL-C) on male Wistar rats. Methods: The content of tocopherols, tocotrienols, and fatty acids in oils was quantified by High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC). Animals were supplemented with 0.2 ml/day of oil. Weekly and during 4 weeks groups of animals were sacrificed, according to their treatment group, and blood samples were obtained to quantify TC, TG and HDL-C. Data were analyzed according to mean, standard deviation, ANOVA and Bonferroni comparisons tests. Results: The oils no affected the TG except in the control and the soy group in the third treatment week. A decrease tendency on the palm group and increase tendency on sunflower and canola groups were observed. No significant differences in TC were observed. In HDL-C significant differences were present on every treatment week (p= 0,005) and besides a decrease tendency on palm group and an increase tendency on sunflower and corn groups were observed. Conclusion: the oils change the lipid profile; a small amount of saturate fatty acids, the tocopherol and tocotrienol content are favourable for the HDL-C increase, and probably the tocorienols decrease the TG and attenuate the unfavourable effects of saturate fatty acids.
