SANCHEZ, Ricardo; MARIO ALEXANDER, Ibáñez  y  PINZON, Alexander. ISSN 0120-4157.

Factor analysis and validation of a Spanish version of the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale in Colombia Background. This study was performed to validate the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS) in a Spanish-language version in Colombia. We used the BPRS because it is one of the most widely used scales in clinical and research settings in mental health. Methods. Factorial structure and internal consistency were studied on 149 psychiatric inpatients. Test-retest and inter-rater reliability were assessed in a sub-sample of 30 patients. Concurrent validity has been analyzed comparing scores on BPRS with scores on CGI Scale. Sensitivity to change has been evaluated comparing scores in two clinically different points. Results. Principal component factor analysis indicates a structure having three domains: schizophreniform, bipolarity and depression. The instrument showed good internal consistency (Cronbach’s alpha=0.79). Coefficients corresponding to inter-rater and test-retest reliability were 0.94 and 0.82 respectively. Correlation between BPRS and CGI was 0.7 (Spearman). Within subjects analysis of variance showed that the scale is an instrument having good sensitivity to detect change of clinical characteristics. Conclusión. From this study we concluded that the Spanish language version evaluated in Colombia is a valid clinical-report instrument with adequate psychometric properties.

Palabras clave : validation study; Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale; psychiatric status rating scales.
