Abstract

LOPEZ URIBE, María del Pilar  and  GUIZA, Diana Marcela. La Caja de Ahorros: An Approximation to the Savings Patterns in Bogotá, 1846-1865. Ens. polit. econ. [online]. 2012, vol.30, n.spe67, pp.128-173. ISSN 0120-4483.

The creation of savings and credit institutions in Colombia was essential to generate a savings habit among the population and build a stable banking system during the 19th century. "La Caja de Ahorros" of Bogotá was an attempt to consolidate a forward looking mentality, especially in the working class. This document shows a description and analysis of the dynamics of "la Caja de Ahorros", its customers and savings patterns of the different savers according to their level of qualification during the existence of the institution. Furthermore, the document made comparisons among different groups of workers and not workers, based on simple statistical analysis and clusters method. The conclusion is that the economically inactive population and female population had a greater willingness to save, followed by the working class. Finally, the workers qualified were those who reported lower amounts of savings.

Keywords : Caja de Ahorros; savings patterns; workers; Bogotá.
