PRADA, Carlos F. Worker Flow Studies and Labor Segmentation in Colombia. Ens. polit. econ. [online]. 2012, vol.30, n.68, pp.72-113. ISSN 0120-4483.
During 1990s Colombia experienced a deep change in the labor market. Changes in social security model, recession at the end of the decade, and other factors had a negative effect on labor market behavior because formal employment became more expensive for both employers and workers. Lost opportunities in the salaried sector, especially the most vulnerable, was slowly driving growth of self-employment. The literature indicates that this caused a phenomenon called labor market segmentation. This paper examines labor market segmentation through an empirical alternative in the recent literature: job transitions. In this sense, labor flows were analyzed and its determinants were estimated. The results of these exercises indicate that during the period there was a massive and sustained change of the formal sector towards the informal self-employed sector. In summary, the evidence shows that the basis of these movements was the effect of involuntary release of past employment.
