Abstract

BARON, Juan D. Differences In Student Characteristics And The Academi C Achievement Gap Between Barranquilla And Bogota: A Semi-Parametric Decomposition Approach. Ens. polit. econ. [online]. 2012, vol.30, n.68, pp.164-215. ISSN 0120-4483.

The city of Barranquilla shows important student achievement gaps compared to cities such as Bogotá. These achievement gaps are sizeable and persistent through the process of human capital formation (fifth, ninth, and eleventh grade). Using information for all tests from Icfes (Saber 5, 9, and 11), this article quantifies such achievement gaps and inquires about the source of the gap in the test called Saber 11 (Icfes). I use a semiparametric decomposition approach that enables me to estimate how much of the achivement gap between Barranquilla and Bogota is explained by differences in the characteristics of students (and their family’s) from each city. Decomposition results suggest that differences in students’ characrateristics between Barranquilla and Bogotá explain between 30% and 100% of the achievement gap between these two cities
