Abstract

SANCHEZ NAVARRO, Dennis. Crucial elements for attracting foreign direct investment (FDI) from the United States using a modified gravity model that includes a spatial component: some Latin American cases. Ens. polit. econ. [online]. 2013, vol.31, n.72, pp.35-50. ISSN 0120-4483.

This paper seeks to identify the elements that are crucial for attracting foreign direct investment (FDI) from the United States. Using a modified gravity model that includes a spatial component an attempt is made to capture, for some countries in the Latin American region, the dynamics of complementarity or substitution that may occur when spatial elements, such as spatial lag and the surrounding potential market impact are included. The methodology closely follows that proposed by Blonigen et al (2007).

Keywords : Gravity model; Foreign Direct Investment; Spatial econometrics; Latin America; Spatial lag; Surrounding potential market.
