Abstract

CABEZA DE VERGARA, Leonor Sofía; LOMBANA-COY, Jahir Enrique  and  MUNOZ SANTIAGO, Alberto Elías. Specialized skills in the supply chain of the logistics sector in Barranquilla, Colombia. cuad.adm. [online]. 2016, vol.32, n.56, pp.81-99. ISSN 0120-4645.

Studies on specialized skills in the supply chain of the logistics sector are quantity limited, and are oriented towards evaluations of the links. This work aims to identify in both the links and the supply chain the required specialized skills for the staff positions in the logistics sector. By means of a survey applied to the companies in the logistics sector in Barranquilla, Colombia, it was possible to obtain information on 12 generic and 12 specific specialized skills from the links and the supply chain, according to the administrative and operational areas. With this instrument, it was possible to identify the more and less recurrent specialized skills according to the perceptions of the specific group of interest. It was found out that from the 24 specialized skills, there are eight relevant ones (found at least within the 50% of the supply chain and the links). There are six generic specialized skills: the teamwork ability; the ability to organize and plan the time; the ability on making decisions and committing to the assigned task; ethical commitment; and the ability on using information and communication technologies. The most required specific specialized skills in this sector are two: knowledge in transport of merchandise and approach towards the client (which includes advising clients on the export and import procedures, and merchandise handling). In addition, depending on each link’s task, other specialized skills required for its performance are added. Finally, it was found that the sector’s demand is more oriented towards operational positions than to administrative ones.

Keywords : Supply chain; Specific specialized skills; Generic Specialized skills; Logistics.
