Abstract

SILVA ROJAS, Alonso; MALDONADO SERRANO, Jorge Francisco  and  AGUIRRE, Javier Orlando. INDIVIDUALIDAD, PLURALIDAD Y LIBERTAD DE EXPRESIÓN EN J. S. MILL. Prax. filos. [online]. 2007, n.24, pp.115-136. ISSN 0120-4688.

The article studies John Stuart Mill's concept of Liberty of Expression, as exposed in his work On Liberty. It holds the idea that liberty of expression enables Mill to solve the problem of Liberty without falling into explanations that suppose the individual's liberty in an essentialist way. Thus, liberty of expression must be analyzed as a principle of a practical argumentative ethics, which is in tension with collective opinion, relative to a concept of truth in process. These five elements constitute the machinic of liberty of expression that Mill proposes. This way, liberty of expression is that which must be protected to effectively secure liberty. This is achieved through a strict restriction of any possible action of society in the individual's expression. Liberty must be understood as something that has to be done, produced, and not as something given.

Keywords : Mill; Liberty of Expression; collective opinion; ethics; individual.
