Abstract

LOPEZ ASTORGA, Miguel. Analysis of selection task by means of a temporary semantics. Prax. filos. [online]. 2014, n.38, pp.53-70. ISSN 0120-4688.

Peter Wason's selection task has the problem that a high percentage of participants executing it offer a wrong response. In this paper, I propose a possible explanation of the most common selection in this task. My explanation, on the one hand, assumes that the participants tend to perfect the conditional that appears in the rule of selection task and, on the other hand, uses the approach of temporary logic, taking from this approach a semantics based on instants in time and the unary logical operator Next. My basic ideas are that the participant interprets that the rule can only be applied to the cards that show on its visible faces the terms mentioned in it, and that turning over a card means the shift to a subsequent moment

Keywords : biconditional; conditional; logic; selection task; temporary logic.
