Abstract

DIAZ GOMEZ, Zenorina Gpe.. Freedom, Modernity and Democracy in the Thought of Ágnes Heller. Prax. filos. [online]. 2023, n.57, e20313170.  Epub July 28, 2023. ISSN 0120-4688.  https://doi.org/10.25100/pfilosofica.v0i57.13170.

This article presents the political proposal of Agnes Heller’s mature stage, as an example that allows us to observe the change that the political horizon has undergone after the end of the great historical narratives and how it would still be possible to think about emancipation. Heller’s proposal, we shall see, considers that the modern project of building a world of freedom and recognition of people as equals is possible since modernity is founded on liberty and not on theological-metaphysical principles, but at the same time that quality prevents the achievements or permanence of any political project from being guaranteed. The awareness of limitation will be the hallmark of Hellerian thought, but also the contemporary political understanding, thus the article adds to this cautious attitude that could seem discouraging, the remainder that the struggles that have been waged in favor of justice, already constitute a legacy that makes it possible the task of building it.

Keywords : Ágnes Heller; Modernity; Freedom; Democracy; Emancipation.
