Abstract

MARTINEZ CERUTTI, Cesar David. Vulnerable Subjects, Dignified Subjects: A New Way of Understanding Human Dignity Based on Martha Nussbaum's Approach of Capabilities. Prax. filos. [online]. 2024, n.58, e20212945.  Epub Jan 16, 2024. ISSN 0120-4688.  https://doi.org/10.25100/pfilosofica.v0i58.12945.

This article examines the conception of the subject that Martha Nussbaum (1947) establishes within the framework of her cognitive-evaluative theory of emotions. The aim is to show how the revaluation of the affective dimension that the author suggests supposes, in turn, a recognition of human vulnerability in its double meaning-ontological and social-. This new conception of the vulnerable subject implies a new meaning of the notion of human dignity. This shift has strong implications from an ethical point of view, especially in regard to the tension between autonomy and vulnerability that characterizes our existence, which will be addressed throughout the work.

Keywords : Autonomy; Affective dimension; Cognitive-evaluative theory; Dignity; Vulnerability; Approach of capabilities.
