Concerto Barroco, like many of Alejo Carpentier's novels, is a historic testimony presented in the form of a spiral. The principle characters, Filomeno and the Master, appear in a musical progression from the pre-classical Baroque age to the beginning of the seventies. Filomeno's practical and popular wisdom and the Master's confused identity produce an obvious resemblance to don Quixote and Sancho Panza. Although both witness the same events, their interpretations are completely different and colored by their social origins. In both novels, while the gaze of the noble protagonist is centered on the Medieval past, his companion from the popular class shows him the right way, enabling him to find himself.
