Resumen

VELIZ, Fernando. Chilean film and industry…the still missing challenge. Signo pensam. [online]. 2006, n.48, pp.149-169. ISSN 0120-4823.

Chilean cinema is a discursive field of the audiovisual industry, still in development stage. Its history is loaded with vagueness and multiple beginnings that often break at the outset. It is a kind of cinema committed to social issues, which at the same time is not foreign to alienation and censorship from above. It is an artsy type that aspires to seem industrial. Chilean cinema narrates from the third world, while 98% of the country's internal consumption (at peak times) pertains to US productions. In other words, it has formed through the absolute self-management of its symbolic capital. It is a cinema that is raising its new breed of directors through books and cult movies, directors that seek to understand their role in this industry that today, with the passing of time, holds audiences captive. It is a cinema that at times walks next to the State, and on occasions solitude becomes its only companion. Lastly, it is a type of cinema founded on its creativity, its self-discovery, and the penchant for transcending its own vocation - understanding, little by little, that its aggregate value lies with its local histories.

Palabras clave : Chilean cinema; film industry; creativity; resourcefulness; added value; local histories.
